Food Network: Surprise Engagement Cakes
I watched Food Network’s Surprise Engagement Cakes show. Four pastry chefs competed against each other to be selected by the newly engaged couple and win the prize of $10,000. The three designers were: Joshua John Russell of Joshua John’s Cake of Atlanta; Jennifer Matsubara of Shelby Lynn’s Cake Shop in Springdale, Arkansas; Marina Sousa of Just Cake of Monterey, California; and James Rossell with Notter School of Pastry Arts in Orlanda, Florida.
The requirements for the competition was at least a 3 foot tall and enough to feed 150 guests. They had 30 minutes to come up with a design after talking to the engaged couple. Then they had seven hours to make the cake.

The winner of the Surprise Engagement Cakes was James Rossell. Here’s a drawing of the middle of his cake which showed the names of the couple. The couple liked the flavor of the cake, the flowers James made for the cake and the personalization of their names on the cake.
James has won one other Food Network competition, the Sweet 16 Contest.
