Dallas brides were lucky this past weekend to have David Tutera at Stonebriar Mall in Frisco to demonstrate how they can create various components of a celebrity wedding at affordable prices. Using products from retailers Godiva Chocolatier, Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma and Swarovski, David demonstrated how to capture those memorable moments with centerpieces, favors, table settings, and accessories.

Here’s our interview with David and the advice he gives for those planning a wedding.

As the leader of the dream team on My Fair Wedding, what do you see as most brides’ biggest misconception about planning a wedding? I think that brides can often get lost in the details…and by this I mean a few things. From a décor standpoint, I think many brides focus too much on the little “knick-knacks” associated with their theme, and forget about bigger elements that have a much larger impact such as linens or lighting. From a different angle, I feel that brides get lost in the details of their wedding and can forget the whole purpose! It really is about the union of two people and their families for a lifetime, and that is what really matters.

We have seen numerous episodes of My Fair Wedding and personally were shocked at some of the bride’s ideas for their wedding day. Spiders crawling on the cake – tulle and more tulle – yuck is about all we can say.   As a wedding professional how difficult is it to tell a bride that her vision for her wedding day stinks? I think anyone who has watched the show sees that I have no trouble at all telling a bride when I think they are headed down the wrong path. As a planner, helping to guide my brides and “revise” their visions is really the point and exactly what they need and are looking for.

DIY brides have become huge in the wedding industry.  You see a lot of brides on your show with a lot of homemade, crazy ideas.  What is your opinion on DIY on your wedding day? I fully support DIY projects for a wedding! It’s a great way to make your wedding truly custom, personalized, and to save some money! The goal however, is to make sure the product looks polished and not too “crafty.”

If a bride wants to implement some DIY items into her day to help personalize her event for you, what would you suggest a bride doing? Great projects for brides to tackle include custom votives, with the outside wrapped in fine paper or spotted with metallic leafing, or the top dipped in glue and fine glitter or a pretty paint rim. Depending on their crafting skill level, napkin rings or treatments with ribbon or tassels are easy, while hand-made ring pillows or stenciled aisle runners are a little more time-consuming, but all are great ways to DIY!

What do you feel is the most important element that a bride should incorporate into her wedding day? That’s easy. The couple! The most important element that should be incorporated into a wedding is the personalities of the bride and groom…that is what will make it memorable and unique. This can be done in so many ways; from the menu to the music to the favors to the getaway car.

On that same thought, what aspect of the wedding day do you gasp at and wish brides would stop doing? Besides avoiding “knick knacks” which I really cringe at, I also wish that brides would stop chewing gum or smoking in their wedding dress! Another thing that makes me cringe is when couples don’t remain with each other throughout their reception…it really sends a bad message about unity when the bride is dancing with her friends and the groom is at the bar with his…

The wedding day goes by so fast and the bride and groom so often feel like it was a blur. What advice would you give to the bride and groom so they can enjoy their wedding day the most? The top two tips I can give are to plan and pay for as much as possible in advance so that you are free to enjoy your day, and to be careful about how much alcohol you consume. You might think you are easing the jitters, or just having fun, but too much champagne or too many cocktails can really spoil the night, and your memory of it!
